The Pfändertunnel is the most important north-south connection in the Vorarlberg Rhine valley and connects Germany (A 96 motorway) with Austria (A 14 motorway). It has been in operation as a single-tube tunnel system since 1980. The construction of the 2nd tube began in October 2007 and it was put into operation in July 2011. Work was then started on restoring the first tube. According to forecasts, around 46,200 motor vehicles will pass through the Pfändertunnel each day in 2020.
